Dizziness and Vertigo

Dizziness is one of the most common symptoms evaluated by a neurologist. Besides the unpleasant sensation, dizziness may lead to falls and injuries. Dizziness is a symptom rather than a disorder and many disorders can cause dizziness. Learn what can cause dizziness and how you can treat yourself at home. When is it important to see a neurologist?

Dizziness is a broad symptom that can be defined by either lightheadedness, imbalance, or vertigo. Vertigo is the sensation of motion or spinning from unequal stimulation of the vestibular system.

Dizziness can be caused by a problem in your brain, inner ear, spinal cord or nerves. Patients with dizziness may also experience vision changes, hearing loss, ear ringing, ear pressure or pain, numbness, headaches, nausea or vomiting.

Describing what you are feeling can help your doctor determine the cause of your dizziness. Let your doctor know how long your dizziness started and the duration of each episode.
