Electromyography
The brain sends signals to nerves who then send electrical signals to activate muscles to work. Electromyography (EMG) is a test that measures the electrical activity in muscles and how well they respond to nerve signals. A small thin disposable needle (like acupuncture) is inserted into the muscles for a second. There may be a minor brief discomfort but no long-lasting side effect. The valuable information may provide answers to the reason for your weakness, soreness, pain, or cramping. The EMG test is usually done together with a nerve conduction study for a complete answer.
Nerve Conduction Studies
Nerves carry electrical signals from the brain to activate muscles. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) measures the electrical signals that travel through nerves to determine nerve damage. A brief electrical impulse is applied to nerves in the arms or legs (feels like static electricity) and the responses are recorded by small adhesive pads on your arms or legs. The valuable information may provide answers to the reason for your numbness, tingling, burning pain, cramping, or weakness. The NCS test is usually done together with an EMG for a complete answer.
Electroencephalography
Neurons in the brain fire electrical signals that can be measured on the scalp. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a recording of brain activity from neurons firing electrical signals. The test is painless and usually takes 60 minutes. Multiple small adhesive electrodes or a cap is applied on the scalp to record the brain’s electrical activity. The snapshot of your brain activity may provide answers to the reason for seizure, memory loss, attention problem, confusion, tumors, head injury, or sleep problems.

Neurotest of New York
We are a leading neurology practice in New York City treating all neurological conditions and EMG testing. All visits and tests are conducted by board certified, fellowship trained physicians from top institutions.
Bathe or shower but do not put on any lotions or moisturizers. Let your tester know beforehand if you are taking blood thinners or have a pacemaker, as special precautions may be needed.
Neither tests should lead to any complications. You may feel some soreness for a day or two where the EMG needle was inserted. If you notice redness, swelling or other signs of infection around the needle mark, please let your primary doctor know.
Eat normally the night before and day of the test. Wash your hair the night before the test and do not use any styling products. Let your doctor know if you are taking any prescription medications.
You can wash off the gel and go about your day as usual.
An EMG and NCS can take up to 30 minutes to complete. An EEG can take up to 60 minutes to complete.
